Friday 27th February, Rush for the finished thrilers
Today was the deadline of the thrillers, 15:00. Our title sequence and soundtrack was still not finished so I and Derek ran into the media suite at 9:00 am to finish the soundtrack. We decided to have a continuing soundtrack throughout the Thriller. This turned out to be perfect because we could downgrade the volume where we didnt need tension and up-graded the volume where we wanted to create suspense. Than the bell rang and I had my English As lesson so it was up to Michael and Derek to finish the title sequence. As Michael and Derek knew little about the title sequence they ran into paninc and excused me from my English lesson for a few brief tips. Luckily for us my English As teacher is also a Medias Studies teacher (Andrew), he understood that the deadline for the thriller was today so allowed me out of the lesson for five minutes, just enought time to show the Michael and Derek how to handle the title sequence and where abouts to place the credits. At the end of my English lesson I ran to the Media suite adn analysed what Michael and Derek had completed. To my dissapointed it wasnt what we planned but never the less our names were still on the thriller and the fact that they tried counts.

Media Evaluation
When we started producing our media product we were told to make it as formal as possible, meaning that it had to directly represent a particular social group. For our Thriller which we ended calling it ‘‘Thirteen,’’ We decided to range it from an age of 18-26. This is portrayed through the age of the main character ‘‘Derek’’ who interprets a typical 20 year old. Furthermore, for the clip we used a car, a
Volkswagen golf, which is an ideal car for an 18-26 year old. Furthermore, in previous lessons we had learnt that the most common argument with ‘‘suspense’’ is weather to have a spectacular action packed opening which some argued will enthral the audience but other argued that the rest of the movie will not lead to the expectations of the opening sequence. Our thriller was only 2 minutes so we decided that it would be best to have an action packed sequence, even though it would not be as enthralling as a Hollywood blockbuster. The thriller challenged conventions of real media products with the use of deictic sound. The car pulling up revealed a gradual uplift in noise as if something was to happen.
For our thriller we relied on the crops to reveal the class of Derek. The smart shoes, shirt and trousers show class, it could reveal a businessperson. Derek represents a 20 year old whom arrives at his property in Volkswagen golf. The car also reveals the stability of Derek’s economy, which somehow foreshadows authority. The film is directed at a young audience, between the ages of 16 – 26. This reveals a normal adult which could relate to a-lot of peoples lives, coming home from work one day etc. Moreover the wife could also relate to normal housewives. Overall by having these two couples in the movie, one dead off course, it could relate to the lives of many people.
Different types of media institutions distribute different types of projects, some on a global scale and some in a national scale. Some distributers require creativity while some just distribute the norm. Our thriller is a norm which should be distributed in a world wide scale but on the internet. As it is, only an introduction into the movie. I believe its better for it to be distributed online and see on the comments it receives from sites such as Vimeo, YouTube and MySpace. Furthermore if positive comments are received from these sites than the thriller could also be distributed on ‘made for tv film’.
Our thriller Is aimed at males from the age of 16-26 albeit females of the same age could enjoy the twists and turns. The reason which we decided aim it at this certain age group is because the characters in the actual movie are of the same age. The age relates to the audience chosen so I would call it a pull factor.
The thriller thirteen will be released on Friday the 13th on all major internet sites: Face book, MySpace, YouTube, Vimeo etc. Our film will be starring Derek a hugely successful actor who’s success has soared through the London community. For advertisement the film will be stamped on Taxis, busses and in the tube. This is going to come to a cost of £2000 for two weeks advertisement. It will be worth it as the name will have to get across to people and hopefully will lead to positive comments on the above internet sites. If the comments turn out positive it would mean that the movie could be used for TV.
With our Thriller we decided that the main theme to attract the audience was going to be through the soundtrack. We decided that we were going to use the soundtrack plus effective camera angles to portray a sense of suspense. An example of this is when Derek walks up the stairs, here the soundtrack is muted and we could hear Derek’s footsteps. As soon as he reaches the top of the stairs we he turns on the light switch and at the same time the soundtrack continue. The switch allows for both the light to come on and for the soundtrack to start.
To construct our Thriller we used a camera, a tripod and a Mac computer. The filming process was straight forward as we knew what had to be done due to the structured plan we made before the filming. It became complicated when we uploaded our videos onto the Mac computer. To upload the video we had to cut and paste the clips that we needed, this meant for us to go through all the clips even the ones where we made mistakes and handpick the clips we were going to use. Before none of us had used final cut pro before so this was a new experience for us all, we thought that it would be extremely hard to cut and paste clips but it wasn’t, it was actually quiet simple but the process was very long. Also when we imported our clips into soundtrack, we had from over a thousand of instruments to pick from. From the prelim task to the final product the main thing we learnt was to complete any work whenever we had free time to.
Looking back at the project:
At the beggining of the project I personally thought there wasnt a chance we would end up with a finished thriller. This due to the time length spent trying to find a location; nerves ran low and the group collapsed at one stage. This tought me to understand the point of views of other group members and not just go ahead what i thought best. Now that the thriller is finished I am glad that I was involved in such a group. This because if the thriller went all according to plan we wouldnt of tested our dedication to the project but because things went wrong on the way I know have some experience on how to deal with the situation better. Furthermore at first I thougth creating a film would of been hard, I guess I was right. Creating a film was ''Difficult''. Moreover it wasnt just Difficult but the process was very long to. The filming itself was the best part of the thriller as we were all involved someway or another. The actual editting was very prolonged due to the precission needed for the matchcuts and the precission needed for the compilation of the soundtrack and clip.

Soundtrack editing
Today I came in at nine in the morning to finish of the soundtrack as there was only two days left for the deadline of the thriller. The soundtrack applied was called ''calm chineese 1'' and the reason that I believed it would be affective is because it had a certain tempo to it. A tempo that kept on building suspense. Cleverly Catherine gave me the idea of having the soundtracks volume change. So for instance for 20 seconds the volume is loud but for the 10 seconds after that the volume should be low which could suggest something was going to happen. Throughout the morning I tried to have the soundtrack and the movie to correspond but it was difficult and just left the soundtrack as it was.
Media lesson:
Later in the afternoon we had our media lesson and the group gathered quickly and took interest on the new extra soundtrack. They were fond of it but realised that it didn’t flow with the clips. The lesson was very long and frustrating and at times asked other students from different groups who were more confident with soundtrack pro to help. The lesson went quickly and frustrations got the better of us and we sat pondering, not working but just thinking of how tomorrow is going to be planned. We have to give the title sequence its final touches plus give the soundtrack many touches.

The whole group turned up to the lesson which was pleasing as the final deadline was so near. I showed the group the soundtrack that I had edited during the half term and they were pleased. They wanted to carry on the theme that I had created with the first 20 seconds. We realised that time wasn’t of the essence so we started to edit a title sequence for the thriller. Mary gave us a mini tutorial on the basics of title sequence. As a group we researched past title sequences from other groups and decided that the title sequence was destined to be laid out in the opening 20 seconds where the car pulls up. Our names floated along the screen and corresponded with the music but the real stand out was the actual title ‘Thirteen’ which splattered out across the car. This was impressive because we used the soundtrack that I had made during the half term and made it work with the title with the scream playing an important part. At the end of the lesson we realised we hadn’t worked as hard as we could of and left the lesson disappointed, knowing that the next lesson was crucial.

Today on the 12th February I was surprised as well as impressed by the effort Michael had shown. As a group we went into the media suite to upload our film and start the editing. Little did we know that the day before on his free lesson Michael had come to the media suite and uploaded the clips plus had edited. He played us the thriller and we were blown away, it wasn’t just good it was exceptional. The match cuts had come out perfectly and the precision in the timing was immaculate. We had to play the clip numerous times just come to terms with its quality. So this left one hour and forty five minutes to analyse and commentate on the clip. All-over again
February 9th was a depressing day. As usual the teachers checked on our progress and had an issue with the way we were handling our project. Mary realised that we hadn’t a house to use as a location and advised that the current filming that was being done was utterly pointless. We stood shocked, pondering on what to do. Than we were told to do the filming in college and manipulate it as being filmed in a house. Personally I thought this was ridiculous and was proud that the other group member thought it was ridiculous to. Out of nowhere, fed up, Derek made a quick phone call and we received the green light that his house was available to film in. Luckily, we had a three hour lesson in which there was more than enough time to complete all the filming. When we arrived at Derek’s house, with his permission we went about the business of ruining his house. Well, ruining to a certain extent. Carefully we placed the couches as if to seem someone had ruined the house. We threw paper all over the floor and turned the table on its head. Now we had the perfect setting so we went to the kitchen and the first shot we filmed was of me pulling out a knife. We contemplated on the angle for this but cleverly Michael decided it would be best for us to have a birds eye view shot of me pulling out the knife. We agreed that it would be a good idea to have this shot as it showed different tools but also gave speculation on who might be that is pulling out a knife. Could it of possibly be a murderer or perhaps a chef. The next shot was an over the shoulder shot on-looking Derek walking up the stairs from the perspective of the murderer (Eni). When Derek reached the top of the stairs we thought that suspense should be created by simply turning the light on. As in horror movies the lighting is crucial. The lighting inside the house was fairly dull and luckily I believe this turned out to be a positive result. My favourite shot of the lot has to be the next one, well it consists of three shots. Shot one sees Derek opening the door, than instantly we used a match cut and had the camera positioned at the back of the door. We believe this was a positive shot as the match cut turned out smooth and because it revealed to the audience that nothing lurked behind the door before the main character knew. Than impressively we added another match cut of the door clothing but this time the camera was positioned at the top of the stairs. When Derek enters the living room there is a sense of foreshadowing that something is going too happened, this is because the camera is positioned inside the living room, under the table. Derek walks directly towards the camera and picks up a letter. Cleverly another match cut is used and this time the match cut reveals Cathrine dead on the floor but only the audience can see this, Derek is to busy reading the letter. Derek than turns his head to the side where he sees Catherine dead on the floor, here the camera jumps back and forth to represent Derek’s point of view but to also reveal an expression from him. To reveal Derek’s expression we have a close up of his face and Derek runs his hand down his face in disappointment, this officially reveals that Catherine is dead. Here we contemplated on what should happen next and decided that Derek was to walk out of the living room and up the stairs to discover what is happening upstairs. Here we have a pan of Derek walking out of the room and cleverly Catherine suggested that the next shot should be of the murderer. As Derek walks up the stairs there is a close up of the murderer and the shot after is of the knife. The shot of the knife is very important as it foreshadow that its going to be in the centre of what is to happen. Here we finish the movie and leave the audience pondering on a cliff-hanger. If Derek is going to be killed or if he somehow overpowers the killer.
Than we rushed outside to film the external shots where we could only use 20 seconds of the necessary time. We already had shots of derrick pulling up in his car from previous shots so decided to only have three shots of Derek. One: of him pulling up in his car. Two: of the car engine shutting. Three: a pan of him walking into the house.

1: Car
The car will be the main prop as it is involved in half of the clip. Also, by having the car we will benefit as it portrays the main character (Derek) as a wealthy individual.
2: Smart trousers
Smart clothing is essential because it shows authority in a character; could represent a business man, police officer etc.
3: Smart shirt

5: Knife
The knife is also very important as our movie is surrounded by death. To the audience the character holding the knife will instantly be acknowledged as the bad guy/ the murderer.
6: Ruined house
The house will also be very important. I am identifying it as a prop because it’s not like any other house; ruined, paper all over the place, laptops broken, dead body, couches all over the place etc.
Furthermore the house that we will use is Derek’s house which is located in Islington.

Today on the 5th of February we decided to choose storyline number 1 (Michaels ‘storyline). Even though we haven’t a house we decided to go and film Derek pulling up with the car and than coming out. We had no secure location so drove around Angel, Islington and packington square where we eventually found a location. Packington square was the perfect place because the houses were typical London.
We thought that by having these types of houses it would be easier for the viewers to realise where the location is set, albeit not a specific location but it’s understandable that it is set in London. Furthermore another factor which revealed that the film was set in England was the right hand drive of Derek’s car. Today was a short lesson, not the major 3 hour one so we hadn’t enough time to complete the shooting. In the time we had we decided to film Derek pull up with his car, the car being the main prop. Than we had a shot of Derek stepping out of the car, here we only see his feet, than pan up to reveal that this is a man of supreme authority. Furthermore it is clear that Derek is a man of supreme authority due to the clothes he is wearing, smart shirt, smart trousers and smart shoes. The idea of this short session was to capture as many shots of Derek as possible and manipulate the shots to seem Derek see a man of authority. Personally I enjoyed this lesson as I realised really wanted to the project outcome to be exceptional. This was shown through the ideas about camera shots, location setting and character profile. The next lesson should be exciting as well as interesting.

February 2nd 2009. Snow day
Today due to the snow the lesson was cancelled. From our groups perspective this was a good thing, a silver lining you could say. It gave us extra time to search for a location for our thriller.

Thriller storyline
January 19th
Creating a storyline was a complete disaster but in the process we stuck together as a group and created a final storyline. Overall we ended up with three storylines. In brief the first storyline consisted of a man arriving home after a days work, he goes home and finds that his house has been ruined and that his wife has been killed; we were going to view the chaos from the mans point of view. The second story was of a murderer stabbing a man to death at his doorstep. The third consisted of a killing in college; the third story was inspired by our teacher as our group reached the point of desperation. For two lessons we argued for which story to use. The original storyline (story one) was inspired by a group representative by the name of Michael and seemed a perfect storyline but there remained a problem which consisted of a house, we hadn’t a house to use for the filming. So, without asking the group I decided to create a new storyline which at the time seemed the right thing but came to realise that it was selfish decision. Due to the mistake I was called into the teacher’s office (Rebecca) and lectured on the event. After the lecture Rebecca gave me a second chance to continue working with the group and advised to pull my act together as it would result in the group failing the project. After I rejoined the group but there still remained the issue of which storyline to use, one or three. Storyline one was simply perfect but we still hadn’t a proper location. The lesson finished and Catherine another group representative gave the group hope and was going to ask her parents if we could possibly use her house as the location.

The whole group turned up to lesson and waited on the prolonged reply of Catherin. To our disappointed the answer was no. We hadn’t a location to film the thriller. There simply wasn’t enough time to carrying searching for a location so we were told to carry out storyline three. We were shocked by the teachers’ advice so I decided to prolong the search for the location another lesson, I was going to ask my parents if we could use the house as a location, all of this for time to search for a possible location. Moreover we spent the lesson pondering on possible locations and found a location in Finchley but Finchley was way to far so scrapped the location. Today we found ourselves even further behind the other groups who by now hand there hands on camera and tripods. We still hadn’t a storyline, location and hadn’t drawn out the camera angles we were going to use. The day turned out awful and at the end we were all going to focus our week on finding a location for the thriller.

Saturday 24th January-Looking for locations
On Saturday the 24th I and four other members representing different groups gathered and set to find possible location for our thrillers. We took the bus number 43 which’s route consists form Friern Barnet to London Bridge. The other representatives Tony and Nicole from the same group decided that this was going to be the location for their thriller, so I decided to give up on looking for locations along the London Bridge area as others wanted to use it and plus I still wasn’t a 100% sure what our thriller was to be or if it was going to be in a internal or external location. The Shining (monday 15th december 2008)
The Shining, a great film. A suspenful thriller which carries on until the end. From the beggining we sense suspense, a long-shot, a car and hills. A long shot of the car and hills convey a sense of lonileness. In the background a reppetitive beat corresponds with the long-shot and give a fealing that around every corner something lurks, but that something is disscovored later on.
For a thriller the begining of the movie has to touch you, catch you even, enthraul you, entertain you. After that the tension drops and arguably you'll loose attention as the movie goes on. With ''The Shining'' it copletely different, it's one of few movies that keeps viewers at the edge of their seats.

Editing the open 30 seconds of the thriller.

Editing the first 30 seconds.
Today we edited the opening 30 seconds of the thriller intro. As the weather affected the shooting process we decided to not waste time and started editing. We uploaded our shots AGAIN (last time they came out wrong so we didn’t use it for our thriller). We decided that we would have a shot of Derek dramatically pulling up with his car. We used a match-cut for this with two shots which allows the viewer to view the car from different angles plus it creates suspense. Than we had a shot of Derek taking out the keys, we thought it would be a good idea because it showed Derek hurrying which directly gives an instinct that something’s happened or is going to happen. The next step showed Derek coming out of his car; in the previous plan we decided that we were going to use a minute of the thriller to convey Derek’s authority as a police detective, but we changed our minds and decided to convey the authority of Derek by the clothes he is wearing; shirt, smart-trousers and office shoes. Furthermore, we thought it would be a good idea for Derek to rush to the door as it built tension and revealed that something was wrong. The last shot we edited of this session saw Derek walk from the car to the door and was portrayed through a panned shot.

The story of the opening sequence + AS WORK
As inspiration Miss revealed different clips of past students works, some good and some bad, some had different values and others had other values. The aim of the lesson was to take notes on the miscenscene, susense, props, camera movement,camera angles etc. The first video that we watched was very inperational and turned out to be the best, it consisted of a title sequence and clip. Very similar to the sleven introduction.The clip introduced hardly any movements of characters but focused on close-ups and 20 seconds of long distance. Before Miss had warned the AS group of the use of long-shots but she herself was suprised by the effect the long-dhot had on the clip.The main stand out feature of the clips was that none used diegetic sound, at first i thought that it would of been impossible for a thriller could be made without digetic sound but after our first clip practice a month ago, I found that suspense was mainly created through the different eddited effects used in a clip. For further inspiration Miss introduced a video of the opening sequence. A documentary which 'in detail' analysed how the opening of a movie has changed over the years. Before cinemas were completely different, you could walk into a theatre at any time, begging, middle or end, and still continue watching the theatre. The film which dramatically changed this trend was by Alfred Hitchcock title ''PSYCHO''. To understand the movie you had to see the beggining or you would end up with a completely different storyline.
The titles to a movie weren't even scanned upon but a revolutionary Graphic Designer by the name of Saul Bass changed this, he made people want to see the opening title sequence. His work consist of ''PSYCHO TITLE SEQUENECE'', ''THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM'' AND '' VERTIGO'' plus many more. All of this allowed the title sequence to escelate while also makin Saul Bass the undisputed Graphic Designer. The title sequence escalated as time went by and this opened new ideas but also sprung some arguments and problems. Problems such as the suspense created in the opening minutes. If to much suspense was created in the opening minutes than the film will slowly become less intrieging and by the end the viewers would of forgot about the actioned acked beggining couple of minutes. FILMING THE THRILLER: TAKE ONE
After finally completeing our final shot plan we decided that we were ready so went off to film our thriller. The plan for the thriller changed every lesson but we finally decied on Michaels idea. An idea in which explores different types of camera shots while at the same time creates suspense, all of this without any sound effects. But of course we decided to also add sound effects to give the thriller greater suspense. Our location was in Ec1, Pembury a deserted area where hardly any cars pass by. This was decided as a reasonable place for the thriller as it's not in a obvious area of London but the postcode is going to reveal that it is set in London. Our main corps for the opening 20 seconds is Derick's car. The opening 20 seonds is going to be split proportionally in half of external and internal shots, so 10 seconds will aply for the internal shots and 10 seconds for the external shots. We went to film the opening 20 seconds and when we arrived at the place we realised that Dericks car wasn't washed and still dirty. As Dereck is playing the role of a detective we decided that a dirty car wasn't suitable but still went ahead with the shooting for practice. Mainly the external shots were focused on Detective Derick rolling into the scene with the car, the follow shot was a tilt of Derick coming out of the car which imiadetely signaled authority. The internal shots mainly focused on corps in which Detective Derick had inside the car, corps such as: a watch, car keys, detective badge etc. All of these corps showed that Dereck was a man of authority. The focus turned to filming outside of the car. We had several shots of Dereck walking out of his car and also a tilt of Deredck. The tilt also shows that Dereck is a man of authority. Furthermore, authority is also portrayed by the clothes in which Dereck is in. Smartly dressed, a shirt, shoes and trousers. After the filming we headed of to the editting room and wanted to finish the introduction of the clip. Here we came to a problem, the shots in which we had taken were inaffective as in nearly all the shots the reflection of me and Michael could be seen. As these were major mistakes we decided that on thursday we were going to film the opening scene again.

second practice video. walking through door
In class we were asked to produce another clip but this time we had to walk through a door. Before we began shooting we had a lesson in which we learnt about shot types and during the lesson we created a shot list. Internal and external are words which identify whether the specific shot is going to be shot inside or outside.In the shot list we also had to give descriptions of the shot. For example,if we were to use a tilt in the shot we had to describe why the tilt was relavent and what the tilt would portray. Moving on we decided that our clip was going to consist of eleven shots. The first shot being a pan of me (Eni) walking in the corridor. We had problems getting this pan right as there wasn't much space to work with.Here the assistant Mick helped us to get an apropriate angle.Also, it was a difficult shot as we had to find a preciese speed in which to pan the camera and had to link this with the movement of the target, all of this in very littlesace. After six shots we finally had a shot worthy of being art of the clip. The second shot was a medium shot of me walking into the dorr. The place in which the camera wasplaced made the traget looked like he was walking into the camera but the third shot allowsfor the audience to understand that the target is walking into the door. The second shot sees the target turning from a corner and walking into the cameras direction. Here we could analyse that hes worried as the targets way of walking reveals little confiddenceand gives the audience a chance to ponder on what the next shot is going to reveal.Furthermore,This allows for audience to identify the target walking towards them.

1st practice video
Today (Monday), we were fixed into groups and had to create a practice thriller. My group consisted of Eni, Derick, Michael and Cathrin. Mick showed us a tutorial of ‘’how to use the camera and the tripod’’. During the tutorial Mick paused the video and gave us each a couple of minutes for a practice of the instructions. Than we were asked to create our videos with our group. We decided that only Derick and I were going to be in the video and Catherin and Michael were going to give instructions. Our Video was set in the college, mainly on the ground floor and in the entrance. We asked to make our clip a thriller so decided that Derick was going to be a famous footballer by the name of Heskey and that I was going to be a fan that happens to see him at the college and reacts in a dramatic way. Michael was in charge of the recordings while we were all involved with the camera angles which we were going to use. The first shot was outside of the college and consisted of a zoom out of the college. The next shot was me walking into the college with a newspaper on my hand. We decided that there was going to be a pan of me walking into the college, the reason behind this was to show where I was coming from and where I was going. The shot after this was a pan which showed me entering the college, whilst walking I am reading the newspaper. The reason for the long shot is to show where I am (Inside the college). Here we thought about the type off transition we were going to have. The reason for the transition was that we wanted me (Eni) to go back in time to a time that I saw Dereck in the college corridor. As we found it hard to think of anything, we decided that we were going to use the editing effects for the transition. We carried on the filming and had a long shot of the canteen where I bought a cup of tea. There was a slow zoom on the tea whilst I was pouring the sugar. This allowed us to create suspense, as it was the only Zoom of me walking. Furthermore, we decided that suspense was going to be created from me walking from the entrance to the canteen; we were going to do this by editing footsteps to the walking. The main part of the clip is the reminiscence of Emile Heskey in the corridor. Here we went into my thoughts and to a time where I was sitting down in the canteen, again drinking tea, but this time I see Emile Heskey and react with a shock. When I sat down to drink the tea there is a zoom of the newspaper I am reading. In the newspaper we can see Derick and straight after that shot we have a low angle shot of Eni sitting down reading the newspaper and have Derick walk in. We thought this would be an effective shot as it shows that Eni is clearly focused on the newspaper whilst acknowledging Dericks image. Here we had low angle shot of Eni reading the newspaper, We thought that the low angle would be effective as in this shot we see the entrance of Derick. Here, suspense is created with the soundtrack. We warm the mood up with a slow soundtrack,calm; than as soon as the door opens; Derek walks in, we hear a change in tempo which reveals tension and suspense
